Tonight I pulled out the whiteboard while we were waiting for dinner, and after much erratic scribbling (by both of us,) Balin started talking about names. Then two unexpected things happened. 1. Sherri said that Hunt was the name for her, me, Athena, and Balin, and he said, “All four of us?” Nice to know he’s conceptualizing numbers that way. 2. I started to write ‘Hunt’ on the board, and he stopped me.

Why am I surprised? He spelled Balin for a lady outside when I was there last. She had asked him his name, then looked at me and asked how it was spelled. Before I could get the first letter out, he spelled it! Josh, you were printing your name (Josh and Hunt) at 3, so next time see if he can print Balin. Then let him practice it pretty regularly. This is awesome!

He’s been able to spell his name for a long time now. He can also spell and read words like MOM, GRAN, DAD, JOSH, and GRANDAD, if not more.
